A little bit of Fashion History

And so the day came when the show was about to take place, as well as the last day of my internship. Philip Treacy’s first big show in 10 years, dedicated to Michael Jackson, Isabella Blow, and Alexander McQueen. I can hardly say when the day began or ended, considering you almost worked 24/7. We were three interns at the sewing department; we were mostly standing by to quickly execute anything that needed to be done. That could be to put together a Tick box (a box filled with anything you might possibly need to mend/fix/adjust the hats). During the day we also did some urgent hat-mending, panic-carried boxes, hats, and clothes up and down stairs while people who had neither slept nor eaten yelled more or less civilized directions. Around 3PM the last of us went from the studio to the Royal Courts of Justice, where the show took place. An amazing building that was huge with long labyrinth-hallways, pillars, and marble floor. Lauren and I, with some help from two other girls, were steaming all the clothes while a security guard kept us under surveillance. Well, he really kept everyone else under surveillance. You see, the clothes we were steaming used to be Michael Jackson’s. We had had them at the studio for a week, with a lot of security and secrecy. One day at the beginning of the week, Philip took us down to the office, told us that this was as secret as any secret could ever be but that he wanted us to be a part of it, and then he showed us the clothes and everyone got to hold the Billie Jean glove. At the show, I ran back and forth between the steamers and the racks to bring out the outfits and check off the ones that were done. I also sew a little bit on one of Jackson’s jackets. A golden metal peace had come off in one of the corners, and when I brought it to the seamstress she said that I could do it. The clothes fitted the super skinny, super tall models like a glove. Very fascinating. Philip came to introduce Lady Gaga to us, she had insisted on opening the show after seeing Philip at her concert a week earlier. She was wearing Isabella Blow’s pink burka at the show.

How we felt when going to the venue

Lauren and I quickly understood that we would only be in the way backstage when the show began, so we snuck down a staircase that lead to the side of the show room, and could see the whole show from there. It was amazing to see how everything came together, with the lighting, the music, the styling, and the gospel choir that sang at one point during the show. By this time, we had managed to change, put in lenses, and do our make-up. 33 hours of work during two days is not doing any wonders for your natural beauty. It took some time before everything was packed up, but by midnight we were ready to go to the after party. I ended up hanging out with a group amazing people I had never met before, and we hung out the four hours I was there (then the club closed and they kicked us out). When I had thanked Philip I took a cab back to my London house.

The feeling when we came to the after party, got a dink with the words “Here you are, princess” and I could completely relax because the show, and my internship, was over, it was incredible. Everything was done, and even though I had to go to the airport at 6AM, I didn’t need to worry about that then.

Akiko, Jenni, me, Lauren, Koo, and Christine. I would never have survived the month
without them.

My main motivation the last days before Sunday was the dream about having reached the airport, found a café, and bought myself a sandwich and a coffee. And then, my friends (hold on now), I would drink the entire cup of coffee while it was still hot. And you know what? It was just as good as I imagined.

My name in the program, how cool is that?!
